Listen/purchase: Hourglass by Jackass Penguins
Around this time, I was fascinated by Antonio Carlos Jobim (well I still am). With Beck’s Mutations album, I also got into Os Mutantes and Brazilian music in general. This was my attempt to create a bossa nova song. Really, it could make a great hard rock/metal song, but that wasn’t where I was at when this was recorded.
Lyrics:
Time is flowing like a van
Driving on the riverbed
Oscillating continuity
Life is like a radio
Turn the dial to what you know
Modulating conformityHourglass is running low
Time to reap what you have sowedI was walking by the sea
Past the driftwood and seaweed
Contemplating infinity
How can someone be content
When they’re all alone and yet
Surrounded with humanity?Hourglass is running low
Time to reap what you have sowedAnd I’m sitting here awake
How I long for yesterdayI was counting grains of sand
As they drifted off my hand
Answering the call of gravity
I was watching waves rehearse
How the foam inside dispersed
And the water flowed so pallidlyHourglass is running low
Time to reap what you have sowed
I think it’s about time to dust this track off. It’s one of the better songs in the last 15 years.
