I am now one of those douchebags that uses Yelp. Every pretentious technological gadget or network I have scoffed at or prided myself in not joining has sucked me in. I am a big slut.
The first time I heard Weezer was at a Radio Shack in the Tyler Mall in 1994. Someone was cranking the Sweater Song from the beginning. When the chorus hit with that muff distortion, it blew me away. I get chills thinking about it.
R&B and soul singer Ben E King, best known for the classic song Stand By Me, has died at the age of 76.
King started his career in the late 1950s with The Drifters, singing on hits including There Goes My Baby and Save The Last Dance For Me.
After going solo, he hit the US top five with Stand By Me in 1961.
It returned to the charts in the 1980s, including a three-week spell at number one in the UK, following its use in the film of the same name and a TV advert.
The song has charted nine times on the US Billboard 100 over the years – King’s version twice and seven times with covers by artists like John Lennon and Spyder Turner. […]
I feel like this guy was/is the embodiment of The Dead Milkmen’s “Bitchin’ Camaro”. Like, he literally looks stuck in 1985. Moments after I shot this he turned around and started cool-guy leaning on it so hard, but I didn’t want to tempt fate and go for the ultimate prize.
I have to go with my wedding song, Frank Sinatra doing “Love Is Here To Stay”. It’s perfect. You have Frankie singing a love song that isn’t sappy. The story of the song itself is sad, but triumphant. The last song George Gershwin wrote before he died, with his brother Ira writing the lyrics after George’s death. It’s a song that has been recorded over and over, and the theme has been imitated ad nauseum, but there’s no replacing the original, and there’s no matching the swagger of Frank Sinatra.
I also considered the Beach Boys “All I Want To Do”, but we decided against it mostly because of the last chorus, where Dennis sings “All I want to do-OOO, is spend my life with you-OOO” with a guttural emphasis on the OOO. Had the deluxe reissue of Pacific Ocean Blue been released prior to our wedding, we could have chosen Dennis’ solo version of the song, which doesn’t have the slightly annoying phrasing of the end chorus on the 20/20 version.
