Listen/purchase: Pornucopia by Jackass Penguins

I go back and forth (no pun intended) on this album recorded in 1998. It’s a look at porn and relationships, and deals with the good and bad sides in a satirical manner. I’ve taken it down a few times, but now it’s back up. You can still stream for free. There are a few more songs that I am proud of to outweigh the songs that I am not so happy with, and many of the good songs didn’t make the cut for Dos Equis/XX, so they are lost to the world without making this album available. I’ll keep it available until further notice. Thanks. -DH

Listen/purchase: Stay Up All Nite by Jackass Penguins

Some of the clearest-sounding songs pre-2002 are found on this EP. This is partially due to the live solo nature of the arrangements, and also to the tape recorder having a good day. The songs found on this tape were early versions of songs later recorded for Hourglass and everything else is what I left on this EP.

Listen/purchase: Hourglass by Jackass Penguins

Most of this album was recorded with two cassette players, like everything pre-October 2002. Record a track on one cassette. Then playback loudly and play along to it while being recorded on the other cassette. You can repeat the process multiple times, but the quality diminishes drastically. This album was different, though. I thought that most of the songs turned out pretty nice. Las Vegas and Tambourine were recorded in one take, without overdubs.

Listen/purchase: The Aeroplane Flies High (Turns Left, Looks Right) by Jackass Penguins

A lo-fi, lo-tech, lo-talent cover version of a Smashing Pumpkins classic.
