Fu Manchu: No One Rides for Free (1994)

Remember when good music still came out of Orange Country?

Well, I give you stoner stalwarts Fu Manchu, whose formative hardcore years as Virulence in the 1980s obviously didn’t preclude them from shifting gears in the next decade and then cruising out to the California desert, just like one of those vintage custom vans so often depicted on future LP sleeves, including one’s plush interior on the cover of No One Rides for Free.

As I wrote in my All-Music Guide review, virtually all of Fu Manchu’s career-spanning musical ingredients are already in place on this full-length debut, as evidenced by elastic-riffed engines for hot-rod poetics like “Time to Fly,” the fan favorite “Ojo Rojo,” the hypnotic “Superbird,” and almost funky “Snakebellies.”

In contrast, the sleepy surf rock of “Free and Easy (Summer Girls)” remains a startling career anomaly, wisely never repeated by vocalist/guitarist Scotty Hill, bassist Mark Abshire, lead guitarist Eddie Glass, and drummer Ruben Romano – the latter pair of course later departing to form Nebula in 1997.

At which point Fu Manchu’s drum stool was filled by former Kyuss man Brant Bjork, who, I’d forgotten, was the acting producer on No One Rides for Free

Well, that makes sense!

I revved it up, hundred and one; Kansas City, here I come!

Let me know if you are interested in a second pressing of this on 7 inch vinyl. I am considering ordering 3 more copies to sell at a loss. I am subsidizing this with Spotify earnings, so you won’t break the bank if you really want one. It costs me almost 30 dollars to press each copy, but I am thinking of selling it to my Tumblr followers for $15 a copy. Message me if this sounds like something you would consider buying.

Our new self titled album will be out on April 1st (this is not a joke), and we’re going on tour this summer (this is also not a joke).

This album was inspired by my experiences hanging around the Westside of Los Angeles, which has been our home since Weezer began. Hanging out with people in Venice and Santa Monica, the beach, the Hare Krishnas, the Sikh on roller blades with the guitar, girls on Tinder within a 4 mile radius, seeing other bands, etc. I would just tweet out “does anybody wanna hang?” and then I’d get together with people who responded and talk about life. I love California. I wanted the album to have a Beach Boys sort of vibe to make you feel like you were there with us SoCal weirdos even if you’re in Milwaukee in December.

North America, get the brand new song “King of the World" instantly along with “Thank God For Girls” and “Do You Wanna Get High?” when you pre-order the white album on Apple Music. The song will be available internationally starting at midnight local time. The international digital pre-order is coming soon.

Watch “King of the World” on VEVO.

CD and vinyl bundles are available worldwide in our webstore.

old school hate mail

Imagine how pissed you have to be to engrave a rock

Ok but there was this guy called Ea-nasir who was a total crook and would actually cheat people ought of good copper and sell them shit instead.
The amount of correspondences complaining to and about this guy are HILARIOUS.

Are you telling me we know about a specific guy who lived 5000 years ago, by name, because he was a huge asshole

More like 4000 years ago but yes. Ea-nasir and his dodgy business deals.

And we haven’t even touched on the true hilarity of the situation yet. Consider two additional facts:

  • He wasn’t just into copper trading. There are letters complaining about Ea-nasir’s business practices with respect to everything from kitchenwares to real estate speculation to second-hand clothing. The guy was everywhere.
  • The majority of the surviving correspondences regarding Ea-nasir were recovered from one particular room in a building that is believed to have been Ea-nasir’s own house.

Like, these are clay tablets. They’re bulky, fragile, and difficult to store. They typically weren’t kept long-term unless they contained financial records or other vital information (which is why we have huge reams of financial data about ancient Babylon in spite of how little we know about the actual culture: most of the surviving tablets are commercial inventories, bills of sale, etc.).

But this guy, this Ea-nasir, he kept all of his angry letters – hundreds of them – and meticulously filed and preserved them in a dedicated room in his house. What kind of guy does that?

every time this post comes across my dash (which is often) it has even more cool info attached to it

This guy was the proto-Donald Trump.
